This was Chaplin's third film for Mutual. It is also one of my personal favorites. Legend has it that Chaplin filmed a different ending to the film in which he commits suicide by throwing himself into a river, is saved by a woman (Phyllis Allen), takes one look her ugly face, and throws himself back into the water. It is up for debate whether or not this footage exists, or ever existed. Robert Florey claims that Chaplin screened this ending for him once at his home. I would think if this footage survived, it would have been included with the other Mutual outtakes in the Kevin Brownlow documentary, Unknown Chaplin.
